KwaZulu-Natal businessman and AmaZulu FC boss, Sandile Zungu has put his hand up for the ANC chairperson position as the province will hold an elective conference in July.
Initially, Zungu denied claims that he will be contesting for a position in the upcoming provincial conference, however, he has since changed his tune.
AMAZULU BOSS GUNS FOR ANC CHAIRMANSHIP IN KZN
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Zungu said after careful consideration he has acceded to the requests to have his name in the hat for Chairpersonship of the ANC in KZN.
Zungu said the argument is that the ANC in KZN is on a downward spiral, come 2024 it is destined for the back benches in the provincial legislature and for some in the ANC this is an unacceptable prospect.
“The branches have asked me to make myself available to work with the collective of leaders who will steer the ANC in the correct direction so that once again, it can be in charge of provincial state power,” Zungu explained.
Furthermore, Zungu said that the ANC in KZN needs a fresh approach and a turnaround.
“I believe that the renewal of the ANC cannot be complete unless KZN is adequately represented in the leadership echelons. The current state of affairs in the province make it further vulnerable to isolation and marginalisation like it happened in Nasrec in 2017 when they went to the conference divided.
“Someone has to do something about the issues facing KZN, especially youth unemployment. If the ANC is the leader of society, I am propagating for a campaign driven ANC. 2024 is not far and by the time I appeal to the electorate, it must have found the party interested in solving many societal issues.”
KZN Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube has also reportedly put her hand up for the same position and will also be going against current KZN Chairperson, Sihle Zikalala.
