Ladysmith flash floods: Death toll rises

Following the recovery of a man’s body, the death toll from the recent Christmas Eve flash floods in Ladysmith has risen to 23.

Tragedy struck the small town close midnight when the river burst its banks creating a new gushing stream of water which washed away a number of number of homes.

RECOVERY EFFORTS COMPLETED

According to KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, recovery efforts in Ladysmith have been completed as all bodies of missing people have been recovered.

“The KwaZulu-Natal provincial police emergency services units have returned to their respective bases following the completion of the search mission in Ladysmith. A body of an adult male was recovered in the Klipriver on Monday afternoon, taking the total number of the recovered bodies to 23.”

SEARCH IN OTHER PARTS OF THE PROVINCE

Search and recovery efforts still continue in other parts of the province also affected by flodds brought on by the recents rains.

One occupant of a vehicle which was swept into Henley Dam in Pietermaritzburg, is yet to be recovered after two others were found.

The family was swept away while trying to cross a low lying bridge.

According to Arrive Alive, a woman and a child were retrieved from inside the vehicle by community members and South African National Defence Force personnel.

Meanwhile, the body of a traditional healer is also yet to be recovered after she was swept away while performing a cleansing with 15 other people.
