KZN police officer who allegedly assaulted girlfriend arrested

A police officer stationed at Hammarsdale in KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend at the weekend.

The 39-year-old Sergeant was arrested on Tuesday, 2 April, in connection with a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Sunday, 31 March.

ANOTHER POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED IN KZN

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said it is alleged that the officer assaulted a 29-year-old woman along the Mthoko Mkhize Main Road on Sunday night.

The suspect, who works at Mpumalanga police station in Hammarsdale, will appear in the Hammarsdale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 4 April.

Netshiunda said investigations are underway into the victim’s allegations that she was initially refused to open a case.

“Should there be any substance on the allegations, internal processes will be instituted, and responsible officers will be subjected to appropriate departmental steps,” he explained.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said that no one is above the law, including police officers
Mkhwanazi said that police officers should be exemplary and walk the talk.

“Women and children must feel safe around men; they must feel even safer in the presence of police officers, whether on or off duty.

“Police officers must champion the fight against any form of violence perpetrated against women and children. If police officers commit any crime, we shall arrest them and ensure they face the wrath of the law,” he added.

Meanwhile, Durban Metro Police constable Sizwe Ngema appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 2 April.

Ngema allegedly stabbed his colleague, who was also his girlfriend, Yolanda Khuzwayo. He filmed his pregnant girlfriend taking her last breath with a knife lodged in her chest.

The murder suspect will return to court on 9 April for a formal bail application.
