Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United pay tribute to Luke Fleurs

The Kaizer Chiefs Football Club has recently taken to their social media platforms to pay tribute to one of their star players, Luke Fleurs who was shot in a hijacking incident on Wednesday.


The football club has announced and confirmed that Luke Fleurs has died. It was shared that he died in Johannesburg last night following a botched highjacking that ultimately took his life.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” Kaizer Chiefs announced.

The 24-year-old late soccer player is said to have joined Kazier Chiefs as a free agent in October following having been released in September by his former club SuperSport United, TshisaLIVE reported.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time,” the Kaizer Chiefs football club penned.

The football club has assured the public that the South African Police Services (SAPS) have been contacted and further details regarding the murder will be communicated at a later stage.

“The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course,” they said.

“May his [Luke Fleurs ] dear soul rest in peace,” the club added.

SuperSport United has also broken their silence in Luke Fleurs’ death. Taking to their Instagram page, the football club said: Everyone at SuperSport United is saddened to learn of the passing of former Spartan, Luke Fleurs. Our deepest condolences to the Fleurs family, friends and everyone at Kaizer Chiefs.”

According to Sunday World, the Kaizer Chiefs’ defender was killed in Honeydew and Gauteng SA Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo has been quoted as saying: “The police are waiting for information on the incident for now… We will comment further on the matter as soon as we gather the details.”

According to the football club’s website, Fleurs was signed on a two-year contract with Amakhozi (Kazier Chiefs) with a possibility for a further season.

“We are very excited and happy to have Luke join us. The young man has great technical abilities and I think he will fit really well into how we want to approach the game and the kind of football we would like to play going forward,” Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung was quoted as saying at the time.
