Law enforcement assures safety and control ahead of national elections

As the nation approaches election day, law enforcement agencies assert they are “in charge and in control,” according to police Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili.

Addressing the media, Mosikili detailed the readiness of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJOINTS) for the upcoming National and Provincial Elections on 29 May.

Mosikili urged voters to participate in elections with confidence

Furthermore, special votes will be conducted by the Electoral Commission (IEC) on Monday and Tuesday, with the general elections scheduled for Wednesday. Moreover, Mosikili urged voters to participate with confidence, assuring them of their safety.

“To all voters, go out there having full confidence that the NatJOINTS’ plan is on track to protect your rights and our democracy. We are in charge, we are in control. As law enforcement agencies, we will ensure your safety throughout this period,” she stated.

Additionally, the Deputy National Commissioner acknowledged the challenges involved but emphasised that past experiences in securing elections have prepared them well for this task.

“The task at hand is immense but through past experiences of ensuring safe and secure elections, we are confident that we are ready for this next phase,” she said.

She called for the commitment and effort of all stakeholders, including communities, to ensure a peaceful election.

Responsible behavior displayed by communities and citizens

In addition, Mosikili expressed gratitude for the responsible behavior displayed by communities and citizens, contributing to a conducive environment for the elections.

She reminded political parties that campaigning must cease by midnight on 28 May, in compliance with the Electoral Act. Any continuation beyond this period would be considered a violation.

Residents are reminded that the Department of Home Affairs will open until 19:00 on Monday and Tuesday and at 21:00 on Wednesday to assist those who want to apply for temporary ID’s or collect their Identity documents.
