South Africa gets an additional public holiday in June 2024

Many tired and frustrated South African citizens will be happy to hear about an extra public holiday in June 2024. That’s because many awoke early yesterday morning to exercise their constitutionally enshrined right to vote. And they hoped they might get some free time to themselves to celebrate and relax.

Unfortunately, the hopelessly underprepared Electoral Commission of South Africa had other ideas and the vast majority of citizens spent several hours in voting queues because of avoidable technical issues and poorly trained staff.

However, near fear, because this is South Africa. And the next public holiday is never far away. The next one is Youth Day which falls on Sunday 16 June 2024. And under the Public Holidays Act of 1994, the additional public holiday in June 2024 is therefore held over to Monday 17 June 2024.

So, get your pencil ready and start to scratch in some much-needed rest and relaxation around that public holiday in June 2024. Especially after yesterday’s 29 May voting day turned into an arduous marathon exercise for most trying to perform their democratic duty.

YOU’RE WORTH IT

Don’t feel guilty because, just like the L’Oréal payoff line, ‘You’re worth it.’ Recent studies have found that South Africans are one of the hardest working nations in the world. Mzansi regularly averages 45 hours of work per week. Many first-world nations average closer to 30 hours per week, which is just six hours per day, pah!

Therefore, it stands to reason, we’re pretty skilled at taking full advantage of our free time when we can, like the additional public holiday in June 2024. For reference, here are the remaining public holidays for 2024:

  • Thursday 29 May: Election Day (complete)
  • Monday 17 June: Youth Day observed
  • Friday 9 August: National Women’s Day
  • Tuesday 24 September: Heritage Day
  • Monday 16 December: Day of Reconciliation
  • Wednesday 25 December: Christmas Day
  • Thursday 26 December: Day of Goodwill
