IEC website crashes as vote counting SLOWS

The website of South Africa’s Electoral Commission (IEC) was down on Friday as the country continued to count votes from an election in which the ruling ANC looks set to lose its majority.

“We apologise for the issue with our public facing NPE system, and are working on restoring service”, the commission said.

“The results system is still operational and local offices continue to capture results”, it said.

EFF has slipped to fourth place overall

In terms of the overall picture at 09:30 on Friday, 31 May, 12 959 of 23 293 voting districts have completed counting (55.63%) with a total of 7 943 840 votes counted.

The ANC leads the way with 3 281 862 votes (41.86%), followed by the DA (1 855 760 votes for 23.67%) with the MK party now in third (860 955 votes at 10.98%).

The EFF has slipped to fourth place with 748 844 votes (9.55%).

As a reminder, in the 2019 elections the ANC finished with 57.5% of the total vote.

The final results are only expected on Sunday, 2 June – as reported by The South African website.
