Mike Makaab sets the record straight on Orlando Pirates fullback


Mike Makaab, from Prosport agency, has cleared the air on one of his clients at Orlando Pirates. Contrary to recent rumours, Bandile Shandu has not parted ways with Pirates, according to his agent Makaab. The 29-year-old defender has a contract with the Buccaneers until June 30, 2026. Shandu has been with the Soweto giants since 2021. Making 16 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring two goals and making one assist.

Shandu’s injury and Pirates’ right-back Options

Shandu missed most of the 2023/24 season due to injuries. With Thabiso Monyane and Thabiso Lebitso sharing the right-back responsibilities. Lebitso joined Pirates from Chippa United in January, while Monyane has been a consistent presence in the team. Despite Shandu’s absence, Pirates had a successful season. Evident with winning the Nedbank Cup and finishing second in the DStv Premiership.

Pirates’ off-season moves continues

Orlando Pirates have already released Souaibou Marou and Fortune Makaringe, and more players are rumoured to be leaving the club. Assistant coach Sergio Almenara has also departed by mutual consent. The changes come as Pirates look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. Marou struggled to find his footing at the club, while Makaringe had a decent run, making 147 appearances but only scoring 10 goals.

Thalente Mbatha’s permanent switch imminent

Mike Makaab has also confirmed that the permanent transfer of Thalente Mbatha from SuperSport United to Orlando Pirates is imminent. The 24-year-old midfielder has impressed on loan and will finalise his move to the Soweto giants. Mbatha’s performances earned him a Man of the Match award in the Nedbank Cup final. He made 16 impactful appearances in all competitions. Going on to score one goal and grabbing two assists from deep. 

Pirates’ future looks bright

With Shandu’s future secured and Mbatha’s transfer imminent, Orlando Pirates are building a strong squad for the upcoming season. The Soweto giants will look to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the DStv Premiership title and defend their Nedbank Cup crown. Coach Jose Riveiro has been working on tactics and player development.
