Bongani Zungu to Kaizer Chiefs: What’s the latest

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Sello Mhlangu has urged Bongani Zungu not to join Kaizer Chiefs next season.

The 31-year-old left Sundowns last week which shocked many people. Having returned to Downs in 2022, Zungu only lasted two seasons before parting ways with the Brazilians. Under coach Rulani Mokwena, the midfielder was hardly utilised by the coach and hardly made a difference last season.

Mahlangu believes something happened between Zungu and Downs, and has advised Kaizer Chiefs to overlook him.

“At this stage, it’s not clear if he is the one who decided to leave, or if it’s the club who asked him to. So far, we haven’t heard anything from the club,” Mahlangu told KickOff.

“What the player put out on his Instagram doesn’t give us the whole picture, but maybe there is a better offer outside the country, which is good for him.

“I don’t think he can leave Sundowns for a local team. It won’t make business sense to anyone involved.”

Ex-Downs star advise Kaizer Chiefs not to sign Zungu

“His next move after Sundowns should be going back to Europe. Him moving to Europe will also benefit Bafana Bafana,” added the former Masandawana star.

“I don’t think he will move to the likes of Chiefs in terms of financial implications. At his age, he is not going to accept anything less than what he is currently paid.

“Nowadays, money is more important than game-time. Money has power, and it brings a will to win. Looking at the former Sundowns players who went to Chiefs, they achieved nothing,” Mahlangu said.

Zungu might opt to return to Europe where he spent 6 years

Since his shock exit, Zungu has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs. The 31-year-old could also return to Europe given his experience but only time will tell.
