Kaizer Chiefs identify cheap alternative in goalkeeper chase?

Kaizer Chiefs need new blood between the sticks with Itumeleng Khune likely to leave. Have they found a new option after being priced out of a move for Stanley Nwabali?

Amakhosi find a new goalkeeper target

According to UnplayableZA on X, Chiefs have inquired about possibly signing Tuks ‘keeper Edward Maova. The 29-year-old Namibian made three appearances in last season’s Nedbank Cup and stands 1.92m tall. He’s only been with AmaTuks for 11 months after joining them from Pretoria Callies in 2023. Is he pedigreed enough to replace Itumeleng Khune? One thing is for sure, Maova won’t cost nearly as much as long-standing target Stanley Nwabali, who was valued at R30 million by Chippa.

Kaizer Chiefs still looking for a goalkeeper, left-back and striker

If Chiefs can secure a deal for Maova, they’ll still be looking for a new left-back to replace Sifiso Hlanti. The other obvious area needing strengthening is up top. Jasond Gonzalez has left the club after a disastrous short loan spell where he played 13 times with zero goals and zero assists. There’s talk that incoming boss Nasreddine Nabi wants to bring Tumisang Orebonye along with him to Naturena.

SoccerLaduma reports that SuperSport United are in advanced negotiations with Keagan Dolly and is the frontrunner for his signature this winter. Cape Town City and AmaZulu are the other candidates to sign the 31-year-old former Montpellier and Sundowns man. However, Matsatsantsa is in the box seat. Sifiso Hlanti and Siyethemba Sithebe follow Dolly out the exit door at Naturena, while George Matlou is signing a new contract.

Dolly, once a superstar winger at Montpellier and Sundowns, has struggled to recapture his best form at Kaizer Chiefs. Since signing for Amakhosi in July 2021, the 31-year-old has only racked up 67 appearances for the Glamour Boys with 14 goals and 11 assists. The 2016 CAF Champions League winner has 23 caps for Bafana Bafana but the last of those came in 2022 in a friendly against France. In three years, he’s cost the club R50 million in wages.
