Former Kaizer Chiefs star departs MLS side!

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star Bradley Carnell has been fired by Major League Soccer side St. Louis City.

Carnell had been appointed as head coach of St. Louis before their inaugural year in the MLS last season.

In the club’s first season, Carnell was able to to lead the side to some landmarks. The former defender won the Western Conference and his side was able to qualify for continental football. His efforts did not go unrecognised as he was nominated for the coach of the season award. This after St. Louis City broke the record for being the MLS expansion side with the most victories in a debut season.

He was also able to bring another former Chiefs player in Njabulo Blom with him to the club. The utility start quickly found form and favour with the St. Louis fans last season. The current campaign has been tough on both he and Carnell, however. The Bafana Bafana international has struggled with injuries, while the team has been in terrible form. It was then no surprise that the club decided to pull the trigger on the 47-year-old mentor.

“St. Louis CITY SC today announced the departure of the club’s head coach, Bradley Carnell. Technical Director John Hackworth will manage the team on an interim basis as CITY SC begins the search for a new head coach.” Wrote a statement from the club.

St. Louis Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel is sad to see Carnell go.

Carnell brought Blom to the club

“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision. Unfortunately, based on our Year 2 results to date, we believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and our results.” He said to the St. Louis media team.

It now remains to be seen what the future holds for Carnell, or even Blom going forward.
