City issues 168 permits for feature films to be shot in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town’s Film Permit Office has announced the issuance of 4 757 film permits between July 1 last year and June 30 this year.

This marks a significant 22% increase from the 3 910 permits issued in the 2022/23 financial year.

Notably, there has been a substantial rise in the number of permits issued for large feature films, with 168 permits granted this year, almost double the previous year’s figure.

Cape Town is a hot set

The film permits cater to a wide range of productions, including feature movies, commercials, TV series, stills photography, documentary films, short movies, student projects, and music videos.

JP Smith, the City of Cape Town Safety and Security MMC, highlighted the growing trend of year-round production in the city.

“In the past, Cape Town attracted a lot of film productions during the summer season due to a number of factors, including our beautiful long summer days,” Smith stated.

“However, what we are seeing over the last couple of years is that filming is increasingly becoming an all-year business, and this is good for both the industry and Cape Town.”

This shift is beneficial for the local economy, with the film industry contributing billions and employing over 30 000 people. To further support the industry, the City has frozen filming tariffs for the fourth consecutive year.

This includes zero-rated fees for the deployment of metro police and traffic services for necessary road closures, resulting in an estimated saving of nearly R700 000 in production costs.

Commercials and micro shoots

The permit office also reported receiving bookings for more than 9 317 film locations in the past financial year. Commercials constituted the majority of film shoots, with 1 604 permits issued, followed by micro shoots at 962 permits.

“We are seeing more and more productions taking place in the winter months, and this was the case for the concluding financial year,” Smith added.

“This is critical for an industry that contributes significantly to our economy and provides numerous employment opportunities.”
