Itumeleng Khune situation becoming embarrassing!

Kaizer Chiefs are yet to announce their decision on veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, ahead of next season.

Khune is now officially out of contract at Chiefs, but there is yet to be a definite statement on him.

Chiefs had eight players who saw their initial contracts come to an end at the end of last month. Keagan Dolly, Sifiso Hlanti, Siyethemba Sithebe and Njabulo Ngcobo were released by the club. Furthermore, on-loan Colombian striker Jasond Gonzalez was also let go after flopping during his temporary spell at the club.

Seven players have their futures decided

It is then also believed that Chiefs have exercised an option on Edmilson Dove’s contract. They then also gave midfielder George Matlou a new one-year deal. The one elephant that remains in the room is the future of Khune. Last month, this publication reported that the former Bafana Bafana international had returned with the rest of the Amakhosi squad for pre-season two weeks ago. A follow up reported that he was not, in fact training with the team and his future was still in the balance.

Now according to FARPost, Khune’s situation is getting dire after his left out of their Turkey trip.

“He is not part of the travelling contingent, which soon-to-be-announced head coach Nasreddine Nabi will assess. The Tunisian mentor is set to join the team in Istanbul over the weekend. While decisions have been made regarding the futures of other players, Khune’s situation at the club is still unresolved. A source close to the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper revealed that he had been informed that he won’t be part of the playing squad for the upcoming season. In recognition of his contributions, Chiefs have offered Khune a non-playing role within the club. The veteran goalkeeper, at 37, is said to have been presented with several options for a potential career transition at Kaizer Chiefs, encompassing coaching, marketing, or an ambassadorial role.” Wrote the publication.

Khune failing to accept Chiefs playing days are over?

This is now becoming an embarrassing situation for Khune, who was once an undisputed number one. This for both Chiefs and Bafana. It looks as if he is having a hard time acknowledging that his best days may now be behind. The club, seem to be struggling to break it to a living legend that they are ready to move on from him.
