Mamelodi Sundowns announce Steve Komphela return!

Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the return of former coach Steve Komphela to their ranks ahead the next season.

Komphela’s reappointment comes right after Sundowns parted ways with his ex-colleague Rulani Mokwena.

Komphela returns to Sundowns

In a statement put out by the Sundowns X account, they proclaimed their delight to have Komphela back.

Mamelodi Sundowns today welcomed Steve Komphela who will serve as Senior Coach and will assist Manqoba Mngqithi and the Technical Team.  Steve Komphela said, “I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love. I am committed to contributing  to the Club achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African Continent.”Mamelodi Sundowns is currently training in South Africa  for the upcoming season and will be leaving in a few days to Austria as part of its pre season preparations.”

Komphela’s timing for a return will surely spark speculation. It was widely publicised that perhaps he and Mokwena did not quite see eye-to-eye. At the start of last season, the former Bafana Bafana coach left the club, joining Moroka Swallows as head coach. After some financial problems at the Dube Birds, he returned to another one of his former side’s in Golden Arrows. There, he steadied a ship that looked like it was sinking.

Linked to different suitors

After saving Arrows, there were talks that several sides had been lining up his services. As a very experienced coach, with continental expertise. He was linked to Simba SC, with the Tanzanian giants still having a vacancy at that time. Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United were also mentioned as possible suitors in different capacities.

In the end, it is Sundowns where Komphela will lend his expertise again, however, and it remains to be seen how he fares. Masandawana are still expected to announce a new head coach to replace Mokwena.
