Kaizer Chiefs waiting for 355 games and counting
Kaizer Chiefs fans have been starved of silverware since they won the league title in 2014-2015. Let’s crunch the numbers.
It’s been nine years since Chiefs hoisted some silverware aloft. That’s a long time to wait for any club, let alone one of this stature. Premier League side Arsenal went without a trophy for nine years in the Arsene Wenger era before beating Hull City 3-2 in the 2014 FA Cup final after going 2-0 down. The parallels are eerie. Sometimes small margins and moments can turn things around in a big way. However, in the present, Amakhosi fans sound fed up.
“Nothing hurts anymore if you’re a Kaizer Chiefs fan. We are taking depression and psychological meds, no room for expectations and sad hearts.” – Hurdson in the South African comments section.
Trophy drought will extend into 2025 if…
Chiefs don’t win the Carling Knockout. With no MTN8 football on the calendar for Nabi’s charges, the Carling Knockout remains the only silverware they can scoop before the end of 2024. If they don’t do that, the infamous trophy drought will become a decade, and counting.
Kaizer Chiefs’ trophy drought by the numbers
It’s been nine completed league seasons (270 encounters) and 82 cup assignments across all competitions since Chiefs were crowned kings of SA football, or winners of any cup for that matter. Add three more matches onto that because of their early title win in 2015, you get a total of 355 football matches since Chiefs fans celebrated a title.
The only way is up from a dismal 2023-2024
It was a campaign to forget for Amakhosi fans and everyone connected with this massive football club. Their worst in the modern era, and a dismal 25 goals scored in 30 league outings. It’s unlikely something THAT bad will be tolerated again. Qualification for next season’s MTN8 is non-negotiable and gradual progress from there will be demanded. No pressure, Mr Nasreddine Nabi.
2015 was a good vintage for the Glamour Boys
Chiefs clinched the league title on April 22nd 2015 with a 4-1 win over Polokwane City, courtesy of goals from George Lebese, Bernard Parker and a Matthew Rusike brace. There were still three games of the season to spare. What a luxury that is.
