FIVE new universities to open in South Africa
Over the next 10 years, five new universities will open in South Africa – two government universities and three private ones.
Government universities
Although many prospective students are turning to private institutions for tertiary education, the government will open up another two universities, currently in development, in South Africa, as reported by Business Tech. At the present time, there are 26 official government universities.
University of Policing and Crime Detection
President Cyril Ramaphosa first announced the establishment of the University of Policing and Crime Detection in 2020. The aim of the institution is to improve the training of South African Police Service (SAPS) officers.
The university will be situated in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, as reported by Pretoria Rekord.
At the beginning of this year, Blade Nzimande said that the technical planning on the university was underway.
“Technical planning work is currently underway to provide the government with detailed plans to enable the long-term development of the new academic institutions and it is expected this work would be completed in 2024.”

University of Science and Innovation
The government will build the University of Science and Innovation in the City of Ekurhuleni, with a spot in Boksburg identified as the prime location. This location is in a highly visible area and the government owns the land. There is also sufficient room for future expansion.
Private universities
Three new private universities will be opening their doors in South Africa in the next couple of years. Although not universities by name, they will offer degrees and therefore function as universities.
Only South African public degree-granting institutions may call themselves ‘universities’ and thus the subtle differentiation between tertiary institutions and universities as far as naming goes. Most accredited private degree-granting institutions use names such as ‘colleges’, ‘institutes’, or ‘business schools’.
Akademia
Trade Union Solidarity is currently working on a R3 billion private Afrikaans university in Pretoria – Akademia. Markedly, Akademia is a Christian and independent tertiary education institution for Afrikaans societies.
Real estate development firm Kanton is working on the college, which will be constructed along Boschkop Road in Pretoria East, roughly eight kilometres from Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
In addition to the study campus, there will also be four men’s and four women’s residences with enough rooms for 1 500 students.
Stadio
Stadio currently has six physical campuses: Bellville, Musgrave, Randburg, Hatfield, and Waterfall. It is currently planning the construction of its new comprehensive campus in Durbanville, Cape Town.
The group previously said that the number of students on its new Centurion campus increased by 52%, confirming its decision to start constructing its second comprehensive campus in Durbanville.
AdvTech
AdvTech is in the process of acquiring a suitable building that can be adapted into a university campus, subject to Competition Commission approval.
Expansion projects are currently underway at Rosebank College’s mega-campuses in Cape Town, Pretoria, and Braamfontein. A new Vega campus is under construction in Pretoria, adjacent to Varsity College, which will be more suitable than the existing premises.
