Disrespectful? ‘Sister Bethina’ interrupts the Haka [video]
South Africans have been accused of “disrespecting” New Zealand’s All Blacks after their performance of the Haka – a native war cry – was interrupted by a plane flying overhead and the DJ playing Sister Bethina.
The Springboks rugby rivals lost 31-27 in a nailbiting test match at Ellis Park Stadium (now Emirates Airline Park).
‘SISTER BETHINA’ INTERRUPTS ALL BLACKS HAKA
Following the performances of both New Zealand and South Africa’s national anthems, the former took to the pitch to deliver their traditional performance of the Haka.
The performance of the cultural display was led by TJ Perenara.
However, both the visuals and audio were interrupted by an Emirates plane flying over the stadium and the DJ blasting Sister Bethina through the loudspeakers.
To add insult to injury, rowdy fans in the stands of Ellis Park Stadium appeared to “disrespect” the opponents by singing over their performance.
APOLOGY FROM SOUTH AFRICANS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
On social media, many South Africans have expressed their embarrassment at the antics of Ellis Park Stadium
@Pavanadithya360: “Extremely disappointed in our supporters; we have always respected the HAKA!”
@tatum_emma: “I would just like to apologize on behalf of all South Africans/ The aircraft flying over, the fireworks and Sister Bethina playing during the Haka, was so embarrassing and disrespectful. Even the camera footage was terrible.”
@SansCue: “I’m embarrassed that DJ played a song during the Haka. It’s so disappointing. The fans also, come on”.
Rugby commentator “Leicester Guy” said: “That is next-level disrespect to the Haka. Blaring music over and showing a plane instead of it?”
