Manqoba Mngqithi suffers back-to-back defeats

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi suffered yet another defeat after his side when down 1-0 to Stellenbosch on Sunday afternoon.

A second half goal by Lehlohonolo Mojela was enough to send Stellies into the MTN8 final having won the two legged affair 2-0 on aggregate. Steve Barker’s men defeated Masandawana 1-0 in Atteridgeville mid-week in the first leg.

Manqoba Mngqithi, who suffered his second loss as Sundowns head coach, was not pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a bit unfortunate. The performance was better than the performance of the first leg but I don’t think this one created better chances than the chances we created in the first leg. (Khuliso) Mudau was unfortunate on two occasions first half and then the second half Lucas (Ribeiro), very good save from Sage (Stephens) and I must also give credit to Sage, (he) has done very well,” Mngqithi told SABC Sport.

Another loss for Manqoba Mngqithi

“I think the substitutes came in very strong, it was unfortunate for us that most of our key players were not at the level that one expected but the truth of the matter is, we should have done better, we should at least have scored a goal so that we can say that we wanted to come here, score a goal and force the game maybe into extra-time but when we haven’t scored not even one goal, it makes it very difficult to make that statement.”

Manqoba Mngqithi has so far been charge of three games so far this season, and has already lost two. Masandawana won two trophies last season under Rulani Mokwena but that was not seen a success to many.

The former Golden Arrows coach had served mainly as an assistant at Sundowns for over a decade. In his first stint as head coach, the 52-year-old coach has failed to impress. It remains to be seein if Manqoba Mngqithi will be kept until the end of the season.

Will Manqoba turn the corner this season?
