Polokwane City drags ex-Orlando Pirates star to court

It never rains but pours for former Orlando Pirates star Mpho Makola, who is being sued for defamation of character by Premier League outfit Polokwane City and its owner for R15 million.

According to Sunday World, Polokwane City and its owner are suing their former footie after he “lied” that the businessman instructed his team manager to take the food he bought for players and feed it to dogs as a punishment for losing a game.

POLOKWANE CITY SUES MPHO MAKOLA FOR R15 MILLION

The club filed their case at the Johannesburg High Court last week. Confirmed reports have it that Mpho Makola made the damning allegations during his interview on Arena Sports Show last month.

During the interview, the star revealed that the alleged incident happened after Polokwane City lost their match against Hungry Lions in Kimberly.

Mpho Makola, who left the club in a huff last year, said the club boss instructed the administrative staff to take the food he had bought for the players and feed his dogs on his farm.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder has it that the club owner told the team manager not to feed the players but to feed the grub to his dogs on his farm in Limpopo.

Mpho Makola said, “When I heard this, I didn’t want to know what happened – did they actually do it or not?

“I actually lost respect for that person and those people in the bus who work with him because, apparently, those are the kind of things they do at that team.”

However, Polokwane City and Mogaladi claim the remarks were incorrect and false. Because of that, they have pursued legal action against Mpho Makola.

The complainants have it that he made the statements intending to defame them and injure their reputations.

However, they revealed that Mpho Makola’s statements also implied that the club was acting inhumanely, aggressively and abusively.

“It ill-treats football players of Polokwane City FC, and these football players are treated worse than dogs. (The club) lacks professional and ethical integrity,” read the papers.

PREMIER LEAGUE OUTFIT DEMANDS R7.5 MILLION IN DAMAGES

However, confirmed reports show the club has lost over R7.5 million in damages because of the defamatory statements.

However, Polokwane City also sought an order directing Makola to apologise and retract his statements. The club owner claims that the remarks targeted the club and himself.

“As a result of the defamation, the second plaintiff has been damaged in his reputation and has suffered damages in the sum of R7.500.000.00.
