Ndlozi supporter Mpho Morolane follows Shivambu, Manyi out of EFF

Mpho Morolane, a former Economic Freedom Fighters Students Command (EFFSC) president, has quit the EFF, reportedly to join the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Morolane, a vocal supporter of EFF member of Parliament (MP) Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he was leaving the party after over 10 years of membership, “to pursue a different path”.

“It is with great difficulty that one has decided to step away from a decade-long affiliation with the Economic Freedom Fighters. My service to the organisation has been with humility, integrity and respect,” Morolane, the EFFSC’s inaugural president, said on Wednesday morning.

Morolane backs Ndlozi

In July 2024, Morolane started mobilising support for Ndlozi to become EFF secretary-general come the party’s National People’s Assembly elective conference in December 2024, replacing incumbent Marshall Dlamini.

“I think I must convene a meeting of all former presidents of EFFSC, including the current one. We must have a view on the EFF National People’s Assembly.

“I will persuade them, if they agree, that a character like Mbuyiseni must come as an SG,” Morolane, who is a member of the EFF’s central command team, posted on X.

Mpho Morolane: EFF exodus in full effect?

Morolane is the third prominent member to leave the EFF in recent weeks, following in the footsteps of former EFF MP Mmabatho Mokause, who announced her departure at the weekend.

“I’ve joined the MK commanders in my hometown of Kuruman, Northern Cape province, mobilising for the future and generations to come. Let us all do so in our province and beyond its borders. No surrender!” she posted on Sunday.

And before Mokause, EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu and MP Mzwanele Manyi also announced their resignations from the party, throwing in their lots with MK Party.

“I wish the EFF full prosperity and success, and wish that all commissars and ground forces will accept the very difficult decision I have taken,” Shivambu, now MK Party national organiser, read from his resignation letter on 15 August 2024.

Is Morolane following Makhubele to MK Party?

Last week, another politician defected to the MK Party, with the South African Rainbow Alliance’s (SARA’s) Colleen Makhubele ditching the party she started to join hands with Zuma.

“My decision to join MK Party will only amplify the work we were doing in SARA, and I will ensure that I carry with me the values and ethics that bound us together,” Makhubele said on 29 August.

Makhubele’s decision came after SARA’s dismal showing during the 29 May elections.

She had aimed for a 1% share of the national electoral pie ahead of the polls but South Africans rejected her party emphatically, give her 4,796 votes – a 0.03% share.

Will Morolane’s departure hurt the EFF in the long term?
