DA’s Cilliers Brink removed as Tshwane mayor

Cilliers Brink has been removed as the City of Tshwane mayor.

Brink was ousted via a no-confidence motion tabled by the African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday, 26 September.

CITY OF TSHWANE TO HAVE A NEW MAYOR

Speaking outside Tshwane House, ahead of the council meeting, Brink said he is worried that whoever takes over from him would undo the disciplinary actions initiated against municipal officials linked to the multi-million rand Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works tender.

As previously reported, ActionSA which was part of the multi-party coalition government led by the DA withdrew and announced that it would vote in favour of the motion against Brink.

The Blue Party also tried to negotiate with the ANC in order to save Brink, however, the ANC in Tshwane confirmed that it would also be supporting the motion. Seemingly, this paves the way for an ANC, ActionSA and EFF coalition as the two parties don’t have enough seats to govern on their own.

On Thursday, 120 councillors voted in favour of Cilliers Brink’s removal while 87 voted against and one abstained.

‘ANC FOUND A USEFUL IDIOT IN MASHABA’

DA caucus leader in Tshwane, Kwena Moloto said despite the successes achieved by the Tshwane coalition in the past 18 months, ActionSA’s dismal performance in the 2024 general election seems to have driven the party to realign itself to a faction of the ANC opposed to the Government of National Unity (GNU) as well as the EFF.

Moloto said the same ANC faction, led by Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, resisted efforts to form a Government of Provincial Unity, and have championed the ANC’s disastrous coalitions with the EFF in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

“In Mashaba, it found a useful idiot. Had the motion of no confidence been withdrawn, it would have given the DA and the ANC the opportunity to discuss options for how Tshwane and other Gauteng metros could be stabilised. Such an arrangement would have been in the interest of residents, and in furtherance of the aims of the GNU,” Moloto said.
