Basketball legend Ron Harper joins 14th RBS Jr. NBA finals


The 14th Royal Bafokeng Sport (RBS) Jr. NBA Finals unfolded at the Royal Marang Hotel in Rustenburg recently, with Ron Harper in attendance.

This event celebrates 14 years of partnership between the NBA Africa and Royal Bafokeng Sports.

It was made even more special by the presence of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper.

The day began with excitement as the U14 boys’ and girls’ finals took centre stage, according to Hype Magazine.

However, nature had other plans. Rainfall forced the cancellation of several finals games, prioritising the safety of the young athletes.

Despite this, the spirit of the community remained high.

RON HARPER WATCHES MATCHES

Over 2,500 locals and school learners gathered to enjoy the festivities. The atmosphere was electric, filled with local brass bands, school war cries, and on-court entertainment.

In the girls’ final, Luka Primary School triumphed over Mfidikwe Primary School to claim the championship trophy.

Mmeti Neo was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match, according to Super Sport Schools.

On the boys’ side, Lebone II College dethroned the defending champions, Bonwakgogo Primary School.

RON HARPER AND THE YOUTH PROGRAMME

Reatlegile Rangwako received the MVP honour for his outstanding performance.

The day also featured a special moment when Ron Harper gifted His Majesty Kgosi Leruo Tshekedi Molotlegi, the King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, a signed Chicago Bulls jersey.

Harper, who played alongside legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, expressed his enthusiasm for the youth programme.

“It’s inspiring to see young talent being nurtured here. Basketball is not just a game; it’s a pathway for these kids,” he remarked.

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS

The event was a culmination of a vibrant build-up that began on Thursday, 19 September.

The local community and school learners enjoyed roadshows featuring Air Elite, an Atlanta-based dunk squad, according to North West Newspapers.

Additionally, a ‘Her Time To Play’ clinic engaged 70 girls from Kitsong Primary School in a leadership workshop. This focused on essential skills like trust and communication.

SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS

The second RBS Jr. NBA Future Stars Camp took place at the Royal Marang Hotel Club.

Ten mentees gathered to discuss the business of sport and their vision for the RBS Jr. NBA programme.

Later that evening, an annual gala dinner acknowledged the academic and sports achievements of youth participants, coaches, and educators within the Bafokeng Nation.

Although the weather disrupted some of the finals, the event succeeded in uniting the community and celebrating young talent.

NURTURING YOUNG MINDS

The continuation of the RBS Jr. NBA Finals for U16 and U18 teams will be rescheduled at a later date.

Local artist Maglera Doe Boy wrapped up the day with an electrifying performance. This further solidifying the event’s celebratory atmosphere.

The 14th RBS Jr. NBA Finals showcased not just basketball but also the power of community.

YOUNG TALENT
