Fans attack match officials after Kaizer Chiefs’ defeat to Sundowns

Many Kaizer Chiefs fans were unhappy after their 2-1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

Lucas Ribeiro and Iqraam Rayners scored for Sundowns, cancelling out Ranga Chivaviro’s early goal for Amakhosi. Although Sundowns seemed in control early on, Kaizer Chiefs took the lead in the 10th minute when Chivaviro held off Mosa Lebusa and scored past Ronwen Williams.

Sundowns equalized in the 31st minute through Ribeiro, and Rayners put them ahead a few minutes later.
In the second half, Chiefs had chances to equalize, but in stoppage time, a potential equalizing goal was disallowed, leading to frustration among the home fans.

After the match, angry fans threw objects at the officials, and police had to intervene to escort them off the field.

Some Chiefs fans believed that Sundowns’ second goal should have been disallowed because Ribeiro was slightly offside when he received the ball.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nabi declined to comment on the officials’ performance, but he was seen arguing with the referee and his team during the match.

“I don’t want to talk about referees. It’s not my speciality, the specialist analyst talks about referees,” the Kaizer Chiefs coach said after the Sundowns match.

Nabi felt that his side dropped their heads once Downs equalised in the 31st minute of the game.

“You want to win everytime, you have a winning mentality, for that… after the goal of Sundowns we observes some players were down. The demons of last year came back after the goal of Sundowns,” he said.
