Leading ladies who NAILED the national anthems this year [videos]


South Africans are beaming with pride after the Springboks beat Argentina to the Rugby Championship title on Saturday, 28 September. Just minutes before, Mbombela Stadium goers and rugby supporters around the country sang their hearts out to the national anthem.

Local performer Nina Brand was the latest and last artist to sing the anthem for the squad’s last match on home soil.

The Boks won the game 48-7.

SPRINGBOKS SECURE RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

For the first time since 2019, the Springboks have won the title of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.

The victory was dedicated to lock Eben Etzebeth, who officially became the most-capped player in history.

In recent months, the Boks – who have won four World Cups – have retained their number-one world ranking by also winning the Freedom Cup and the Nelson Mandela Plate

2024 NATIONAL ANTHEMS – WHICH ONE WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?

As much as the Springboks fill South Africans with pride and joy, so too does the national anthem. And making it even more special is the fact that SA is celebrating 30 years of democracy. 

Nina Brand was the latest singer to perform the national anthem, which was sung for the Boks’ last match on home soil in 2024.

Nina is one of many leading ladies who have sung the anthems in stadiums around the country. Here is a look back at all the performances sung in South Africa…

KB Motsilanyane

In July, actress and singer KB delivered a phenomenal performance at the Springboks’ first match on home soil at Loftus.

Her moving execution involved allowing the crowd to finish singing Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika.

Ntokozo Mbambo

A week later, gospel singer Ntokoko of the Joyous Celebration group performed another emotional rendition of the national anthem in Durban.

Jody Williams

The 2007 Idols SA winner was next on the list, returning to the spotlight to sing the national anthem in Bloemfontein.

The singing competition winner  – who previously vowed to quit music – performed at the Springboks first-ever test match against Portugal.

Another former Idols SA winner – Sasha-Lee Davids – backed by the Mzansi Youth Choir delivered a beautiful rendition at the Springboks vs All Blacks game at Ellis Park (now Emirates Airline Park).

And finally, Tarryn Lamb was the last leading lady to perform the national anthem at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, also against the All Blacks.
