HERMAN MASHABA CLAPS BACK AT GARETH CLIFF

On Friday, Gareth Cliff took a swipe at Action SA leader Herman Mashaba, who was accused of “political backstabbing following the ousting of Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink.

Mashaba, who supported the ANC’s motion of no confidence, tweeted: “ActionSA welcomes the removal of Cilliers Brink as mayor of the capital city, ending an 8-year failed reign of the DA in Tshwane!”

Gareth – known for his outspoken and often controversial comments – replied: “Yeah, and I look forward to not paying my rates and taxes to this sh*t-show of a municipality anymore.”

Mashaba was not impressed by the CliffCentral founder.

He tweeted: “I wonder if [I can] call on black and coloured residents of Cape Town to stop paying the uncaring municipality of the DA?

“I wonder if all non-whites who helped create this country by force, must demand reparations for centuries of forced labour? Just asking! We can’t build a nation on double standards”.

In another tweet, Herman Mashaba said of Gareth Cliff: “This man needs to be taught a lesson by Tshwane municipality. If he lives there.

“This is not 1948, where you are governed by coercion and brutality, which you have not apologised to millions of South Africans who endured such treatment.

“In 2024, the municipality will just apply the democratic laws you are disrespectful of”.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T PAY YOUR RATES?

If you’re lucky enough to be a homeowner in South Africa, you’ll know that keeping up with your property rates is serious business.

Berry Everitt of the Chas Everitt International property group revealed what could happen if you refuse to pay or fall behind.

He told Private Property: “Your local authority can go to court and get a debt judgment against you.

“If you don’t pay your property rates, SARS can also have your property attached if you don’t pay your income tax.

Gareth Cliff has vowed to not pay his rates following the axing of Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink. His tweet has angered many South Africans, including Action SA’s Herman Mashaba.

“There are also hefty penalties for not paying tax, so even if you can reach an agreement to pay off the debt and prevent your home from being auctioned, it is likely to cost you a lot more than the original tax bill.”

According to Live Real Estate, you also can’t escape paying your rates by selling your home.

“The municipality won’t issue a clearance certificate. SARS will take a percentage of the profit you make on the house,” it said.

DO YOU THINK GARETH CLIFF’S STATEMENT IS IRRESPONSIBLE?
