New Perth Johannesburg flights on the horizon

Qantas intends to offer direct scheduled flights between Perth and Johannesburg next year.

As stated in a media release, Australia’s national carrier, Qantas, said it intends to relaunch direct flights between Perth to Johannesburg from mid-2025.

However, the launch of the service is subject to obtaining border agency approval.

This is good news for South Africans living in Perth as well as in South Africa since increased flights will mean more air connectivity. Moreover, this could result in reduced flight prices.

JOHANNESBURG PERTH FLIGHTS

South African Airways currently operates scheduled flights on this busy route. It relaunched this popular route on 28 April this year.

The airline currently offers three services a week between Perth and Johannesburg but it will increase these to five per week from early January next year.

Qantas launched scheduled flights on the route a few years back but later withdrew the service due to logistical issues at Perth International Airport.

That said, Perth International Airport is set for major expansion with significant capital investment plans.

Qantas and its low-cost subsidiary Jetstar are set to operate flights from a new terminal at Perth’s airport.

QANTAS AIRBUS A380 FLIGHT

In addition, Qantas has operated its inaugural Airbus A380 flight between Sydney and Johannesburg.

Australia’s national carrier has deployed the superjumbo to Johannesburg – its sole African destination – for the very first time.

Qantas will operate the Airbus A380 across the Indian Ocean up to six times per week from 30 September.

The aircraft seats up to 485 passengers across four classes – first, business, premium economy and economy.

The A380 replaces the Boeing 787-9 which Qantas has been using to operate this route since March 2021.

IMPROVED PASSENGER EXPERIENCE

Flight time from Sydney to Johannesburg is 14 hours and 40 minutes while Johannesburg to Sydney takes 11 hours and 55 minutes.

Considering these lengthy flight times, the Airbus A380 offers added space and comfort, thus enhancing the passenger experience on flights to Johannesburg.

That said, this Qantas flight is the world’s only A380 flight that crosses the southern Indian Ocean.

In addition, when flying a southerly route on a clear day, passengers can sometimes view Antarctica from the aircraft.
