When is Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns?

Both tied at the top, Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns’ is arguably the most anticipated fixture on the SPL calendar.

Both outfits have started the season perfectly—three wins from three—but only one side will lift the trophy when the Betway Premiership concludes on 24 May 2025.

Will it be a record-extending eighth title in a row for Mamelodi Sundowns’? Or will the Buccaneers claim their first championship in 12 long-awaited years?

Star Boys for Orlando Pirates

The combination of six goals and two clean sheets in three games suggests that the Soweto Giants are as solid at the back as they are at the front, and while this is true, some players are shining brighter than others.

Enter 19-year-old sensation Relebohile Mofokeng, who loves dancing pass defenders. On the opposite flank, you’ll find Monnapule Saleng, who, along with Evidence Makgopa, already has two goals in his 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign.

Behind the attacking line are Bafana Bafana’s Thalente Mbatha, a dynamic box-to-box midfielder with a keen eye for goal, and the always-productive Thabiso Sesane.

Newly signed Iqraam Rayners has settled in nicely, scoring three goals in three games. He and teammate Lucas Ribeiro Costa are the league’s top goal-scorers heading into the international break.

Ribeiro was phenomenal against Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, as was 26-year-old Tashreeq Matthews, who’s already bagged one goal and four assists. The pacey winger has been a revelation this season, answering the critics for what many believe was a lacklustre 2023/24 season.

On the other side of the pitch, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams ensures the Brazilians are safe between the sticks. Some of you may remember his penalty heroics against Cape Verde in the 2024 African Cup of Nations quarterfinal.

Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns: When is it?

Their first match will be at Sundowns’ Loftus Versfeld Stadium on 11 January 2025, and they will meet again at Orlando Stadium on 15 March 2025.
