Rulani dodges and takes cover after angry Wydad fans throw missiles

Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena is already feeling the heat eight games into his new job.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor suffered his third league defeat of the season after his side went down 1-0 defeat to 10-man RS Berkane on Saturday. After the match, he had to be escorted out of the stadium by security after angry Wydad fans threw objects directed at him.

Wydad came into the match just three points behind log leaders Bekane but Rulani’s men dropped the ball and lost the match.

“At big clubs, you have to win games. My philosophy and beliefs are mine, and I’ll die by them,” Mokwena told Moroccan media.

“Someone from Egypt told me, ‘Mokwena, you need to win the CAF Champions League with Wydad.’ He said, ‘Pitso Mosimane never won the Premier League title with Al Ahly, but he won the Champions League.’ He told me, ‘I am the guy to win the Champions League with Wydad.’

Wydad fans wants Rulani Mokwena out

“I understand the expectations of Wydad fans, but we will get there. Inshallah. When we get there, we have to improve and even get much better,” Mokwena added.

“I believe in this team, our staff, and our work. No coach comes in when the team finished 6th the previous season… with new players, new board, new staff, and to be honest, I thought we would have struggled more than we have. I think it’s a good start for Wydad.”

Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad will next face FUR Rabat this weekend in a league match.

Can Mokwena turn Wydad’s season around?
