Heartbreaking Tragedies: 7th Grade Boy Fatally shot, 4th Grade Child Dies from Consuming Spaza Biscuits

Johannesburg – The Gauteng Department of Education is grieving the loss of two schoolchildren – one was fatally shot at his residence, while the other died after consuming a contaminated snack purchased from a spaza shop.

“Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is profoundly heartbroken by the tragic deaths of a Grade 7 student and a Grade 4 student from Wilhelmina Hoskins Primary School in Riverlea on Monday, (2 December 2024),” stated Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education.

“As per the information we have, it is reported that the Grade 7 student was shot by unknown assailants at his home on Saturday, (30 November 2024).

“In a separate unfortunate event, the Grade 4 student became ill on Monday, (2 December 2024), after allegedly eating biscuits from a nearby spaza shop.”

As a result, emergency services were summoned to assist the Grade 4 student medically.

However, he was pronounced dead while receiving medical care at home.

The police are currently looking into the details surrounding these tragic occurrences.

“We have sent our Psycho-Social Support Unit to offer counseling to the school community on Tuesday, (3 December 2024),” added MEC Chiloane.

“We are indeed saddened by these losses and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and the school community during this challenging period.”
