Cape Town Cements Its Status as a Top Global Filmmaking Hub with R900 Million Studio Investment
A significant property deal has been finalized for a portion of a City-owned site in Paardevlei, Somerset West, setting the stage for a substantial R900-million film studio project spearheaded by Cape Point Film Studios (CPFS).
The agreement was finalized following a site visit by Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayco Member overseeing Economic Growth.
This groundbreaking project aims to transform the location into a cutting-edge film facility, enhancing the city’s reputation as an international filmmaking hub.
Job Creation
CPFS intends to renovate existing structures to establish a state-of-the-art studio complex that adheres to international standards.
Future plans for the development also include a specialized sea and underwater sound stage area, offering distinct opportunities for filmmakers.
“We appreciate the City of Cape Town for partnering with us on this journey because, as industry professionals, we recognize how rapidly the content and filmmaking sectors are evolving,” stated CPFS director Henry F Herring.
“The demand for more strategic initiatives, like world-class sound stages to support this growth, not only aids filmmakers in telling their stories but also significantly contributes to the sustainable development of the film industry, which has a 1:4 multiplier effect on its value chain, thereby creating more job opportunities.”
A Destination for Local and International Productions
Meanwhile, Vos underscored the project’s potential to invigorate Cape Town’s creative economy.
According to recent data from the South African Cultural Observatory mapping study, the cultural and creative sectors contributed R161 billion to the nation’s GDP.
“This lease is poised to create hundreds of jobs, inject nearly R1 billion into the local economy, and enhance tourism in Cape Town,” Vos added.
“The creative economy ranks as one of the top-performing sectors in the city.”
How Cape Town Plans to Make Its Hiking Trails SAFER This Summer
In related developments, the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is implementing enhanced security measures to better safeguard residents and visitors during the peak season.
Cape Town is home to breathtaking mountain hikes on its outskirts. Recently, the increase in foot traffic has led to a rise in opportunistic crime.
Last summer, SANParks encountered a series of robberies and muggings occurring at various hotspots within the Table Mountain National Park.
As part of its preparedness for the holiday season, the CoCT is enhancing security at popular tourist locations, including hiking trails, historical neighborhoods, and the CBD.
