Brazilian drug mule arrested at OR Tambo Airport for smuggling pellets

Johannesburg – A Brazilian drug mule who was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday was found to be expelling pellets filled with narcotics.

The 21-year-old man, who had swallowed the pellets, landed on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, shortly after 12:20.

According to SA Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the Brazilian’s arrest on Tuesday afternoon followed up on intelligence received by law enforcement.

“The drug mule was taken to a local hospital where a medical x-ray confirmed the presence of foreign objects in his stomach,” Brigadier Mathe stated.

“The process to retrieve these foreign objects has begun, and SAPS can confirm that plastic-wrapped cocaine ‘bullets’ are being expelled by the suspect.”

Brigadier Mathe also mentioned: “He is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges of drug possession and trafficking before the week concludes.”

Brigadier Mathe noted that police at OR Tambo International Airport are maintaining vigilance as they ramp up their efforts for safer festive operations.

She emphasized that the SAPS “Safer Festive Season Operations” are fully operational nationwide, ensuring that criminals in all areas are “feeling the pressure.”

The arrest of the suspected drug mule marks the second such incident in just a few days.
