Fire and Two Fatalities Caused by Collision Between Cars, Trucks, and Bus on N3 Near Pietermaritzburg

Pietermaritzburg – A tragic multi-vehicle accident involving trucks and a bus occurred on the N3 North Bound near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in the loss of two lives and numerous injuries.

The fatal incident transpired around 10 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Upon arrival at the scene, ALS Paramedics reported finding two trucks and a fully loaded bus engaged in a rear-end collision on the national highway.

“Upon impact, the vehicles ignited,” stated Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, late Thursday.

“The Pietermaritzburg Fire Department was deployed to extinguish the fire while Paramedics assessed and provided care to multiple victims.”

“Currently, it appears both the bus driver and the truck driver succumbed to their injuries as a result of the crash.”

“Around 20 individuals received treatment at the scene for various injuries by multiple ambulances before being transported to different hospitals in Pietermaritzburg for further care.”

The road will remain closed as emergency personnel continue to clear the site.

At this time, the details leading up to the accident are unclear; however, all relevant authorities are present and will conduct an investigation.
