Rooibos Extracts: Leading the Global Health and Wellness Industry from South Africa

Johannesburg – There is a significant surge in the demand for herbal and botanical extracts globally, with projections indicating a 5.5% annual growth rate until 2030, potentially reaching a market value of USD 54.2 billion.

Rooibos, celebrated for its adaptability and health advantages, including supporting heart health, managing stress, and aiding digestion, is carving out a notable presence in this expanding market, emerging as a significant contender in the global extracts sector.

Adele du Toit, representative of the Rooibos Council, notes that over half of global consumers are now pursuing products containing botanicals. This trend is largely influenced by a movement towards natural ingredients, an increase in health consciousness, and a growing inclination for functional foods, beverages, and clean skincare products.

“Factors such as rising disposable incomes, advancements in biotechnology, and an ageing demographic are further propelling this increase,” she adds.

The green Rooibos extract market alone, currently valued at around USD 141 million, is anticipated to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3% over the following five years, potentially reaching an estimated value of USD 227 million – indicative of a bright future.

Extracted from the indigenous Aspalathus linearis plant of South Africa, Rooibos extracts are utilized across various sectors, including food and beverages, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and health supplements.

This swiftly growing market not only enhances Rooibos’ economic importance but also positions South Africa as a pivotal player in global agriculture and trade.

Du Toit clarifies that Rooibos extracts are essentially concentrated forms of the Rooibos plant.

“We obtain the bioactive components from purified Rooibos leaves and stems by steeping them in hot water,” Du Toit explained.

“Following filtration and concentration, the resulting solution undergoes additional processing through evaporation to produce a highly concentrated Rooibos extract, which is then dried into a fine powder.

“These extracts are rich in antioxidants such as aspalathin and nothofagin, which are recognized for their health benefits, including reducing inflammation, supporting heart health, and combating oxidative stress.”

Rooibos Ltd manufactures a variety of water-soluble, spray-dried powder extracts in a state-of-the-art on-site extraction facility, suitable for use in cosmetics, supplements, baked products, beverages, and numerous other applications.

Rooibos extracts are categorized into two primary types (red and green):

  • Red Rooibos extract is derived from fermented Rooibos leaves, which confer the extract its distinctive reddish-brown hue and sweet, earthy flavor. Although its antioxidant content is slightly lower than that of green Rooibos, red Rooibos extract remains a favored option for uses focused on taste and overall health benefits.

Green Rooibos extract comes from unfermented Rooibos leaves, processed to prevent oxidation. This variety maintains a lighter color and grassy flavor while being higher in antioxidants. Green Rooibos extract is particularly sought after in products aimed at maximizing health benefits.

Rooibos extracts have permeated various industries due to their versatility and appeal:

  • Food and beverages: Rooibos extracts are prominently featured in teas and infusions, flavored water, energy drinks, and functional beverages. They are also integrated into baked goods, dairy products, and sauces, where their unique flavor and antioxidant benefits enhance value.
  • Cosmetics and skincare: The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features of Rooibos make it a desirable component in skincare and haircare formulations. From anti-aging creams to soothing balms, Rooibos extracts are widely used in products targeting sensitive or mature skin.
  • Nutraceuticals and supplements: Rooibos extracts are increasingly prevalent in dietary supplements focused on enhancing heart health, boosting immunity, and aiding relaxation. The high antioxidant concentration appeals to health-oriented consumers.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Emerging studies suggest possible therapeutic uses for Rooibos, especially in addressing metabolic and inflammatory issues. This has sparked interest in its incorporation as a functional ingredient in pharmaceutical products.

As the only producer of Rooibos, South Africa occupies a unique space in the global market. Rooibos extracts are shipped to major regions, including Europe, Asia, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Du Toit indicates that the demand for Rooibos extracts mirrors a larger trend towards natural, sustainable ingredients.

“Both green and red Rooibos extracts provide distinct advantages, with applications spanning diverse industries.

“This growth highlights the country’s ability to cater to international demand while adhering to rigorous quality standards.”

Although the Rooibos extract market is experiencing upward momentum, challenges such as climate change and rising production costs present potential threats.

However, the industry is evolving by researching drought-resistant farming methods and sustainable harvesting practices.

Du Toit believes that by investing in innovation and sustainable practices, the Rooibos sector is well-equipped to sustain its competitive advantage.

“As public awareness of Rooibos’ unique attributes continues to grow, the Rooibos industry is set for ongoing expansion.”
