Pienaar Tavern Mass Shooting: Death of Victim in Hospital Raises Toll to 9

Pienaar – The number of fatalities from the Pienaar tavern mass shooting in Mpumalanga has increased to nine due to the death of another victim in the hospital on Monday night (20 January 2025).

This marks the third individual to have died while receiving medical care.

Six others were killed instantly when assailants opened fire at the Levisa Bar Lounge in Pienaar on 10 January 2025.

Two suspects have been apprehended in relation to the mass shooting.

On Tuesday (21 January 2025), the two suspects – 43-year-old Mduduzi Khehla Lubisi and 39-year-old Bongani Patrick Nkosi – were brought before the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane stated: “An additional murder charge was filed against them following the death of the ninth victim.

“This male victim, aged 33, reportedly passed away in the hospital on the night of 20 January 2025.”

The proceedings concerning Lubisi and Nkosi were postponed to 28 March 2025 for further investigation.

Both defendants have been remanded in custody.
