Reviving Mzansi with an Exciting New Sport
South Africa is launching an exhilarating new sport: the African Biathlon. Unveiled today by the Nedbank Running Club, the largest running initiative in South Africa, this program is designed to motivate South Africans to embrace an active lifestyle by blending culture and excitement into the running experience.
Traditionally, Biathlon is an Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting—activities that don’t quite align with our warm climate. The African Biathlon transforms this notion to reflect the lively spirit of Mzansi.
The African Biathlon consists of two parts. The initial part is a 5km run, created to be accessible for runners of all skill levels. After the run, participants can engage in a “carrot” activity that encourages participation. These activities can range from socializing over coffee, enjoying local art, sampling wines, to even going to a party. Importantly, the decision rests with the participants, ensuring that every African Biathlon reflects the diverse interests of its attendees.
Research indicates that 77% of local runners wish for running communities in their areas. The African Biathlon seeks to address this need by combining fitness with community involvement through shared interests.
“Our goal is to cultivate a new kind of running culture,” remarked Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and member of Nedbank Running Club. “The African Biathlon is more than just fitness; it’s a celebration of our culture. It’s about running, connecting, and savoring time together.”
The first African Biathlon is scheduled to occur in Johannesburg from February to March 2025, in collaboration with leading community running groups such as Benchwarmers Running Club, Social Running Club, and Vault Running Club, ensuring a community-focused approach.
Each event will intertwine a 5km run with engaging post-run activities in a welcoming and friendly environment.
The running community will play an active role in shaping the African Biathlon’s format. Participants will have the opportunity to choose their desired post-run activities, making this initiative a true reflection of South Africa’s creativity, diversity, and vibrant culture.
“Nedbank is committed to enhancing banking efficiency for our customers, allowing them to focus on what truly matters—spending time with their loved ones,” says Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “The African Biathlon is not solely a fitness initiative; it is a celebration of community and culture. For those starting new fitness journeys this year, it offers a refreshing and enjoyable way to stay motivated while having fun.”
