After clearing a corner from the Gunners, the home team sought to launch a counter-attack.

Doherty made a forward run with the ball and was intentionally taken down by Lewis-Skelly.

While many anticipated a yellow card, referee Michael Oliver opted for a red card instead.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel immediately confronted the referee to express their discontent.

They were quickly joined by William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice, who voiced their frustration through dramatic gestures.

Following a VAR review, officials upheld the initial decision, leading to Lewis-Skelly’s reluctant departure from the field.

He appeared perplexed as he exited down the tunnel, arguing with the fourth official along the way.

Manager Mikel Arteta seemed equally discontent but urged his players to keep their composure.

The Premier League later issued a statement clarifying the red card, stating: “The referee’s decision to issue a red card to Lewis-Skelly was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, which deemed his action as serious foul play.”

BBC presenter Mark Chapman described the ruling as “absurd and illogical, particularly for one of our top referees.”

Arsenal fans also aired their outrage, with one stating: “I don’t say this lightly, but that red card for Lewis-Skelly is the most shocking decision I’ve witnessed at a football match.

“I’m utterly astonished that VAR supported it. It should have been a straightforward yellow card to prevent the counter-attack.”
