Gogo Maweni, Sangoma, Released on R5,000 Bail After Arrest for Assault
Johannesburg – Ann Makgotso Mofokeng, popularly known as Gogo Maweni, has been granted bail of R5 000 by the Protea Magistrates’ Court, where she faces a charge of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
The 38-year-old defendant, a well-known Sangoma (traditional healer) active on social media, surrendered to the Mondeor Police Station on 19 January 2025.
The incident in question took place several years ago on 17 December 2019 in Dlamini, Soweto.
According to allegations, Mofokeng assaulted the complainant by striking them in the mouth with a bottle.
“The case was previously provisionally closed as the complainant could not be located,” stated Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority.
“However, ongoing investigations led to the arrest of the accused and her subsequent court appearance.”
During the court proceedings, the state did not contest the granting of bail, and the magistrate imposed conditions that Mofokeng must notify the investigating officer of any plans to leave the country and refrain from making contact with witnesses.
