Possible Change of Venue for Barcelona vs Real Madrid Due to Camp Nou Renovation Challenges
EL CLASICO could potentially take place at Wembley Stadium due to the ongoing issues related to Barcelona’s £1.25 billion renovation of the Nou Camp.
The Catalan team has been competing at the Olympic Stadium in Catalonia for almost two years while their iconic venue is undergoing major renovations.
Barcelona had been hoping to return to Nou Camp before the season’s end, aiming for a potential showdown with their arch-rivals Real Madrid on May 11.
However, their plans have been disrupted as reports suggest that the Nou Camp will probably not be finished until next season.
The stadium was torn down in June 2023, with a new structure being constructed on its foundations.
Despite committing £1.25 billion to increase its capacity from 99,354 to over 105,000, Barcelona’s management is now concerned that the Nou Camp will not be completed in time for the next El Clasico.
This situation leaves them without a venue for the final month of the season, especially since their lease at the temporary Olympic Stadium will end in April.
A possible solution could be a lease extension until summer.
However, the Olympic Stadium, with a capacity of 58,000, is already reserved for several concerts in May, including the opening performance of The Rolling Stones’ upcoming European tour.
Barcelona is now exploring the possibility of hosting their match against Real abroad, having previously faced disappointment in December when a match against Atletico Madrid in the U.S. was canceled.
La Liga officials have often dreamed of staging an El Clasico in the United States, but such a plan seems improbable considering the tight timeline.
Instead, the Mail reports that Wembley has surfaced as an alternative venue due to its historical significance as the site where Barcelona won their first European Cup in 1992.
