The SPAR Proteas Shine in the UK at the 2025 Vitality Netball Nations Cup with Syntichie Kabuya’s Impressive Debut
Nottingham – The SPAR Proteas launched their 2025 Vitality Netball Nations Cup journey with a resounding victory over Uganda, winning 70-45 at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham.
This remarkable win marked South Africa’s first Test of the tournament, establishing a strong foundation for their campaign ahead.
Elmeré van der Berg was the standout player, netting an impressive 40 goals, while Kamogelo Maseko, who was named Player of the Match, added 17 vital goals to the scoreboard.
The SPAR Proteas took control from the start, finishing the first quarter with a solid 19-13 lead.

By halftime, the Proteas had increased their lead from 6 to 8 goals, finishing the half 33-25 against the Uganda “She-Cranes.”
A dominant third quarter witnessed the SPAR Proteas gain a significant advantage, concluding that period 51-31, setting the stage for a commanding finish.
The team showcased a remarkable performance, demonstrating their skill, strategy, and unity.
In the final quarter, both teams collectively scored an impressive 33 goals, but South Africa claimed the quarter 19-14, sealing the victory 70-45.
SPAR Proteas coach Jenny van Dyk expressed satisfaction with the outcome, crediting the win to their hard work and thorough preparation ahead of the match.
“We are focusing on ensuring we can maintain performance throughout the quarters and grow stronger as the game goes on, while also aiming for a strong start.
“The players truly performed exceptionally tonight, and it was wonderful to observe. We genuinely believe we can rank among the top four teams in the world.”
Syntichie Kabuya, who is the newest member of the SPAR Proteas, made her memorable debut in the last quarter.
“I was thrilled to make my debut,” Kabuya remarked.
“It was an incredible experience, unlike anything I have encountered before. Being on the court felt both daunting and familiar since it’s just netball.
“It was enjoyable to compete against international players and to embrace something new.”
Assistant coach Zanele Mdodana was visibly emotional following Kabuya’s debut and took to social media to share her pride.
“My heart… I couldn’t help but cry tears of joy. Knowing the journey you have undertaken to reach this point is moving. Keep working hard, keep pushing yourself – your only limit is yourself! Welcome to the Green and Gold, Nzeba! Embrace the challenge and hold on tight,” Mdodana encouraged.
The SPAR Proteas are set to face the host nation, England, on Sunday, (2 February 2025), at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham.
The centre pass is scheduled for 6 PM.
