Home Affairs Minister Dr. Schreiber Praises President Ramaphosa’s Address in SONA

Johannesburg – Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has expressed his appreciation for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s support for the progress and reform agenda articulated during the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Minister Schreiber noted his enthusiasm regarding President Ramaphosa’s backing of the progress, reform, and digital transformation initiatives within the Department of Home Affairs.

“As the guardian of all identity, civics, and immigration services, Home Affairs plays a crucial role in the digital transformation of government,” stated Minister Schreiber.

“Our vision over the next five years to deliver Home Affairs services from home, as announced in September of last year, is wholly centered on the digitalization and automation of all services and processes, in accordance with the President’s directives.”

Alongside recognizing the strides made at Home Affairs to address long-standing backlogs, the President also mentioned during SONA that in the upcoming 12 months, the department will:

  • Develop the initial components of a digital ID system to combat identity fraud, promote social and financial inclusion, and ensure accessibility for everyone with just a touch;
  • Introduce a modern Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system – powered by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning – to streamline tourist and short-stay visa applications; and
  • Establish the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) to enhance tourism from the emerging markets of China and India.

“I appreciate the President’s backing for our digital transformation initiatives,” said Minister Schreiber.

“We have already made significant progress, and the President’s announcements during SONA will enable us to further expedite the implementation of these transformative reforms.”
