Milei’s Opposition Becoming More Frustrated Following Endorsement of LIBRA Meme Coin

Argentine opposition lawmakers are calling for President Javier Milei’s impeachment after his promotion of a cryptocurrency that collapsed, resulting in a $4.4 billion market value loss. The incident has raised questions about presidential conduct, leading to plans for an impeachment request due to the embarrassment it has caused internationally.

Milei’s recommendation of the $LIBRA token on X caused a surge in price to nearly $5 before crashing within hours, revealing red flags about the project’s legitimacy. The token, based on Solana (SOL), aimed to boost Argentina’s economy through small project funding but lacked transparency and credible information from its inception. On-chain analysis exposed insider manipulation that led to one of the fastest and largest collapses in meme coin history.

The Argentina fintech chamber has acknowledged the potential for a “rug pull” scheme, where developers artificially increase a token’s value before selling off their positions, raising concerns about cryptocurrency governance in the country. Milei attempted to distance himself from the controversy, claiming ignorance of the project details, but opposition members view his involvement as potentially impeachable conduct due to his affiliation with the collapsed token.

Milei’s approach to decreasing government spending has drawn comparisons to President Donald Trump’s efforts to cut federal regulations, with both leaders endorsing meme coins that have led to investor losses. Critics have highlighted conflicts of interest arising from the crypto profits of both Presidents, further intensifying the scrutiny on their digital asset involvements.
