“What Are You Doing, Itu?” – Fans React

Itu and Sphelele took to Instagram to share pictures from their weekend filled with Pirates spirit, both dressed in all-black outfits, which fans immediately linked to the Buccaneers.

Khune’s Instagram feed was inundated with bewildered comments from supporters questioning his true allegiance. Meanwhile, Sphelele fanned the flames with a post reading: “You can tell which team I was backing.”

The backlash was quick: @kaizerchiefs_fan: “Say it isn’t so, Itu! How could you do this to us?”

@loyal_amakhosi: “This feels like betrayal. Kaizer Chiefs made you, and now you’re cheering for the rival?”

@football_fanatic: “Just admit it, the Pirates play better football.”

In an attempt to ease the situation, Khune reassured his fans in the comments: “Amakhosi 4 Life.”

On the other hand, his wife softened the criticism slightly while still acknowledging the competition: “They play good football.”

What’s Next for Itu?

Last year, after two decades with the club, Itu Khune quietly exited Kaizer Chiefs when his contract was not renewed for the 2024/2025 season.

The 37-year-old seasoned goalkeeper was celebrated by the club in December for 25 years of commitment, starting from his time in the youth academy.

Now, with stakes in a sports betting company, Khune might be charting a new course in the realm of football—off the field.
