According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the investigation was initiated following a tip-off regarding a suspected drug dealer who was believed to be part of a larger network operating nationwide.
The suspect had been under close surveillance for drug-related activities in De Rust, Western Cape, until authorities were able to trace him to Vanderbijlpark, where the highly sophisticated lab was discovered.

This initial raid led to further findings at the Vanderbijlpark site, where law enforcement discovered a fully operational lab capable of mass-producing Mandrax tablets.
Commenting on the discovery, Wyk stated, “The diligent efforts of the team, spearheaded by competent investigators, have effectively dismantled a significant drug manufacturing operation.
“The suspect is anticipated to face severe charges regarding possession, distribution, and manufacture of illicit drugs.”
Continuing Investigations Into Broader Syndicate
The apprehension of the 46-year-old suspect forms part of an ongoing inquiry into a widespread syndicate functioning in Gauteng.
This marks the latest success in a series of substantial drug busts targeting illicit manufacturers and their distribution channels throughout South Africa.

Earlier this month, Gauteng authorities discovered a significant drug cache at a self-storage facility in Derdepoort, Pretoria, with a street value estimated at R15 million.

The retrieved substances included scheduled medications, steroids, and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), indicating the syndicate’s involvement in the illegal trade of controlled substances spanning multiple sectors.
Moreover, a significant breakthrough in February led to the arrests of six individuals linked to a prominent operation, which had been utilizing an online platform for distribution.
Preliminary findings suggest that the syndicate was engaged in distributing various illicit substances, including stimulants, steroids, and other hazardous drugs.
Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk highlighted that while some charges against two suspects were dropped, investigations into the syndicate’s expansive operations are still underway.
