Fashanu is currently being investigated for charges including criminal conspiracy, threats to life, intimidation, trespassing, and fraudulent acquisition in Nigeria, where he lives.
The former footballer adamantly denies the charges and is pursuing legal action against the police for £100,000 in damages, as stated by the Mirror.
He alleges that the police violated his rights by unlawfully detaining him, his wife Vivian, and attorney Chinyere Chigbu over what he claims is a civil dispute about land ownership.
Reports indicate that investors had intended to pay Fashanu more than £500,000 for a 22-acre plot of land before tensions arose.
After discovering that the investors had sent workers to construct a perimeter fence around the property, Fashanu and his legal counsel decided to probe the situation.
They claim to have found the workers being strangely protected by police and were both arrested after stating they would go to the police station to resolve the issue.
Fashanu has accused authorities of “arrest, detention, and inhumane treatment” for an estimated period of three hours on December 16.
He also reported that there were “subsequent intermittent restrictions” on his “personal liberty” until December 19.
Allegedly, Vivian was wrongfully detained as well, having accompanied him to the police station.
Additionally, Fashanu asserted that police’s confiscation of his mobile phone amounted to a “gross unconstitutional infringement” of his rights.
