Umzimkhulu River Bridge to Undergo Repair Work and Closure
Durban – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has revealed that the Umzimkhulu River Bridge will be closed for essential repairs.
The closure of the Umzimkhulu River Bridge will take effect today, (Monday, 17 March 2025).
“We would like to inform everyone that the Umzimkhulu River Bridge will officially close at 15h00 today,” MEC Duma stated in a release.
“This initiates the emergency repairs and rehabilitation of the bridge, which was constructed in 1958 using the old caisson construction method.
“These repairs will enhance the bridge’s durability for approximately 25 years and beyond.”
MEC Duma indicated that excessive rainfall and flooding have compromised the bridge’s piers.
The water flow has caused the piers to shift, rendering the bridge unstable and unsafe for drivers.
“This led to the decision to close the bridge to prioritize public safety. We delayed the closure to consult with key stakeholders,” MEC Duma explained.
The stakeholders included the Institution of Traditional Leadership and Khoisan, leaders from political parties like the African National Congress and Democratic Alliance, the Ray Nkonyeni Business Association, Green Net, local ratepayer associations, and the South African National Taxi Council in the Ugu District.
“We had a productive meeting yesterday that was marked by open and vigorous discussions,” MEC Duma noted.
“Our conversations were rooted in mutual respect.
“We all concurred to act in the best interests of the residents of Ugu District Municipality and the province as a whole.
“We recognize that the closure will impact all residents — both affluent and less fortunate.
“This is why we have committed to unite behind the shared goal of Inspiring Hope for a Better Future.”
MEC Duma also shared the following updates:
- P464 will serve as a temporary alternative route while we await National Minister Barbara Creecy’s approval to waive toll fees at the Oribi Toll Gates Ramps North and South.
- If the toll waiver for the N2 is approved, repairs to P464 will proceed concurrently with the bridge work, ensuring a safer and more efficient travel pathway for all users.
- A budget of R190 million has been designated for this project, which is expected to last six months.
- Approximately 121 local community members will be hired, working over 528 days with an estimated cumulative salary of around R11.7 million.
- By 28th March 2025, a public liaison committee will be established through the municipality and the Department of Transport, comprising nominated members from various community organizations.
- The recruitment and selection of the Community Liaison Committee will occur starting 11 April 2025.
- On-site work is slated to begin on 11 May 2025, following the approval of the work permit.
- The anticipated contract value to be awarded to emerging contractors is approximately R7,632,000 (R7.6 million).
- The South African Police Service, who attended the meeting, will take a firm stand against any rogue elements or construction mafias attempting to extort money or impede the ongoing repairs.
