Businessman Edwin Sodi Cleared of Assault and Attempted Murder Charges
Johannesburg – The case involving assault and attempted murder against prominent businessman Edwin Sodi has been dismissed by the court due to the absence of both complainants.
Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, stated that the Randburg Magistrate’s Court struck the case off the roll on Thursday, (20 March 2025).
Sodi faced charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred in March 2022.
The allegations were brought to the attention of the police by Sodi’s estranged wife, Nthateng Lerata, who filed charges against him.
“The State was prepared to move forward with the trial, emphasizing that it did not accept the complainant’s withdrawal statement in light of the pervasive issue of Gender-Based Violence in the country,” Mjonondwane explained.
Nevertheless, the court considered the fact that both complainants were absent and that one had submitted a withdrawal statement.
“The second complainant expressed a desire not to proceed with the case; consequently, the defense requested that the case be struck off the roll, a request that the court granted,” Mjonondwane reported.
Ultimately, the court dismissed the case.
“The NPA remains dedicated to supporting victims of GBV and will continue its efforts to combat this pressing issue.”
