Embarking on a 400-Mile Minibus Adventure With My Kids to Reach the Euro 2024 Final and Pursue World Cup Dreams

JORDAN HENDERSON embarked on a seven-hour journey spanning 400 miles in a minibus to support England during their Euro 2024 final loss in Berlin after being left out by Gareth Southgate.

Now, the Ajax midfielder — humorously referring to himself as Van Henderson for the challenging trek with his family — is focused on reaching the World Cup next year under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

The former Liverpool captain made his long-awaited return to international play after a 16-month absence, making a brief appearance in the recent 2-0 qualifying match victory over Albania at Wembley.

Tuchel believes Henderson’s extensive experience throughout the qualifiers will be vital, and his dedication to the England team is unmistakable.

This was highlighted by his swift journey from pre-season training in Amsterdam to Berlin to cheer on the team during their 2-1 loss to Spain in July.

Despite being part of six Euro qualifiers under Southgate, the 34-year-old Henderson was left out of the squad after his controversial move to Saudi Arabia.

When asked about attending the match at the Olympic Stadium, Henderson stated: “I wasn’t sure until late if I could go because of training commitments.

“But once I confirmed I could make it, I found no available flights. I couldn’t leave from either England or Amsterdam.

“So, I looked at the distance and rented a van for my family and kids. The drive lasted seven hours.

“I felt connected to the qualifying journey, as I was involved in every squad leading up to the Euros.

“Watching from home was difficult — I only wished for the lads to succeed and come out on top.

“It’s unfortunate that it didn’t turn out well, but I’m glad I experienced the match in person. I felt a strong urge to be there.”

Fans were surprised to spot the Henderson family at various service stations during their road trip to Germany.

He remarked, “During our bathroom breaks or quick stops, it was funny connecting with the fans.

“It was nice to interact with them, but of course, I would have preferred to be with the team.”

The experienced midfielder has had a commendable season with Ajax, aside from a brief period in January when the club considered transferring him to Monaco to lessen salary expenses.

Additionally, he has made a significant off-the-field impact, helping the club establish a six-point lead in the Eredivisie.

Although Henderson’s return garnered mixed reactions from some England fans, Tuchel’s choice has proven wise, as the team lacked leadership in Germany.

Did Henderson fear that his international career was over? He replied: “Not really; if that was the case, I would have retired.

“I felt disheartened last summer, but I believe I’m still in good shape and never intended to close that door. Deep down, I’ve always wanted to make a comeback.”

Jordan Henderson's Ajax 2024-25 Europa League stats: games 9, chances created 8, passes 566, goals 0, assists 1, tackles 13, fouls 4.

“Whether or not I received another opportunity was outside my control, but thankfully I remained focused, worked hard, and accomplished what I needed to.

“I’ve enjoyed a solid season with Ajax, and I’m fortunate to have been given the chance to return.

“From my debut until now, my commitment to England has been evident.

“I have consistently aimed to give my best each time I am selected — and that will not change.

“Experience is vital on the field, but it’s equally important to integrate younger players. Our squad embodies that principle.”

Tuchel has stressed that communication was a significant concern for the England squad during their time in Germany.

As Liverpool players can attest, Henderson excels in on-field communication.

As he seeks his 83rd cap against Latvia at Wembley on Monday, he remarked: “It’s not solely one player’s responsibility to communicate.

“You need five or six players communicating consistently during the match. The more voices, the better.”
