Bafana’s World Cup Qualifier Preparation Interrupted by Training Setback Against Benin

Bafana Bafana face a significant logistical challenge as they cannot conduct a training session at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Monday, right before their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Benin on Tuesday at 18:00.

This issue arises because Ivory Coast is also scheduled to play a World Cup qualifier against Gambia at the same venue, Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, on Monday at 21:00.

Consequently, Bafana Bafana will have to acclimatize to the match-day pitch on Tuesday itself.

In line with FIFA and CAF regulations, both teams are obligated to train at the venue the day prior to the match. However, the scheduling clash with Ivory Coast’s match against Gambia disrupts this requirement.

This scenario forces the Bafana Bafana coaching staff and management to look for an alternative training venue before Tuesday’s encounter, a situation likely to exasperate coach Hugo Broos.

Broos, who is expected to hold a press conference shortly, is likely to voice his discontent regarding the handling of this matter by the officials of Benin and Ivory Coast.

He has previously raised concerns about countries hosting matches at venues that do not meet the required standards and has called for penalties in these situations.

Notably, Benin is among the 12 CAF member associations that cannot host FIFA or CAF events due to their stadiums not fulfilling the necessary requirements.

This situation prompted Bafana Bafana to delay their departure from South Africa to Ivory Coast. They utilized the extra time for recovery and preparation following their 2-0 victory over Lesotho at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday before taking a chartered flight on Sunday afternoon.

The postponed departure, which garnered some attention, was reportedly a strategic move by the team to ease potential frustrations, according to sources at Sportswire, who suggest it may have been a deliberate tactic by Benin officials.

While Bafana Bafana celebrated their win against Lesotho, Benin managed to achieve a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Thursday.

Bafana Bafana currently leads Group C with 10 points, with Benin closely trailing at eight points after both teams have completed five matches.

A positive aspect for Bafana Bafana is that their next four group matches after the one against Benin will take place in South Africa. Lesotho and Zimbabwe will host their home games in South Africa due to a CAF ban regarding their stadiums not meeting the required standards. Bafana Bafana have already completed away matches against Rwanda and Nigeria, with the return fixtures scheduled in South Africa.

Only the group winners will secure automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, while the four best-placed runners-up will have another chance through playoffs.
