Facre Recognition Technology Now Used by Passengers in Moscow Metro for Fare Payments

Moscow – Passengers using the Metro Rail in Moscow, Russia, can now board trains by utilizing facial recognition technology, eliminating the need for cash, cards, or mobile phones for fare payment.

“Residents of Moscow can enjoy unlimited travel on the Metro, MCC (Moscow Central Circle), MCD (Moscow Central Diameters), and standard river routes through facial recognition,” stated Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, on Monday, 24 March 2025.

“This feature is accessible via the MultiTransport service.

“There’s no requirement for cards or smartphones to access the turnstiles.

“This highly convenient payment method offers bank-level security, with all data encrypted.”

Liksutov emphasized that the integration of biometric payment systems with the MultiTransport service provides new opportunities for travelers.

“Muscovites can take advantage of this payment option to enjoy seamless, combined journeys, achieving savings of up to 30%,” Liksutov remarked.

“We are incorporating optimal payment solutions with bank-level security into our pricing schemes, following directions from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.”
