MTN and Springboks Announce Conclusion of Sponsorship Collaboration

After a series of impressive victories at the Rugby World Cup, highlighting exceptional teamwork, skillful plays, thrilling tries, and immense joy for fans from all walks of life, the sponsorship agreement between MTN and the Springboks comes to an end after a noteworthy eight-year period.

The Springboks, who have triumphed as world champions, have secured the Rugby World Cup a historic four times, with two of those victories—2019 and 2023—taking place during the MTN partnership.

Recently, Sportswire reported that MTN would not be renewing its agreement once it expires in June.

“This partnership has been remarkably inspiring and rewarding for MTN, especially since we became the lead sponsors during a challenging period for rugby in 2017, following the Boks’ struggles since their last World Cup win in 2007,” said MTN SA CEO, Charles Molapisi.

“For us, it was more than just branding; it was about driving transformation by reconnecting rugby with the community and fostering the spirit of Ubuntu. We demonstrated our leadership and commitment to South African sport, and we couldn’t be prouder of the results.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to SA Rugby for placing their trust in us as the headline sponsor for such a long duration. We are proud of our collaboration as they fostered the game’s evolution and ushered in a golden era of success for both current and future generations.

“As we wrap up this successful journey on and off the field, where the game extended beyond the iconic venues like Emirates Airline Park, Stade de France, and Twickenham to urban centers, small towns, and rural areas that needed growth, both MTN and the Boks will embark on new chapters in their sponsorship journeys.”

Mr. Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed: “I want to sincerely thank MTN for their unwavering support throughout the past eight years.

“We reached out to corporate South Africa for partnerships during a challenging period for rugby in our country, and MTN answered that call decisively. Together, we’ve experienced what will certainly be recognized as a golden age for the sport.”

“The Springboks have visited MTN’s offices twice as newly crowned world champions, marking the pinnacle of our partnership. MTN has supported us at every turn—not just in our quest for rugby victories, but also in showcasing the strength of South Africa’s diversity when we come together.

“MTN’s belief in us during those trying times was truly uplifting. Indeed, rugby would have struggled without the unwavering support of our partners. MTN was at the forefront of this effort, and we wish them all the best in their future pursuits.”

Along with SA Rugby, MTN was instrumental in enhancing the global reputation of SA Rugby and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“In addition to the professional game, MTN has dedicated R30 million towards grassroots rugby development across South Africa, and we will continue to play a vital role in nurturing the growth of rugby nationwide,” Molapisi added.

During its time as headline sponsor, MTN concentrated on expanding and motivating the fanbase to rally behind their team. MTN invested in fan engagement initiatives like BokSquad, the official Springbok supporters club, and the Bozza platform, bringing fans closer to their passion—and their team.

Molapisi remarked: “Our achievements would not have been possible without the fans, and I want to express my gratitude to every Bok supporter throughout the nation—from young children in Dutywa cheering in the streets to families in vibrant cities and serene villages—for their incredible passion and loyalty. The Boks’ global successes reflect their steadfast support.

“I firmly believe that rugby and its development are poised for even greater advancements, built on the firm foundation of transformative achievements, loyalty, support, and excellence showcased over the past eight years.”

As part of its renewed branding strategy, MTN is rethinking its sponsorship approach to seek new opportunities that will foster progress for an even broader range of athletes across the country.

MTN remains committed to sport and development in South Africa, continuing to invest in football through its MTN8 sponsorship.

“We proudly wear the Bok jersey. The success of rugby illustrates the unifying power of sport in our nation, inspiring its people and providing hope to millions. With ongoing support from MTN and other corporations, combined with backing from organizations like SA Rugby, South Africa will continue to nurture the champions of tomorrow,” concluded Molapisi.
